Vintage Navaj Rug, Navajo Transitional Blanket/Rug with a rare Saltillo Serape Design, ca 1890 - 1900

This highly unusual and visual blanket/rug was woven from homespun yarns. the white and black are all undyed natura yarns. The red and green in the bold multi diamond central design are commercial aniline dyes.

The design elements are heavily influenced by the Classic Mexican saltillo Design of the 19th Century.

With the bold central diamond design and the "floating" intermittent accent lines through out the body of the weaving

This seemingly prototypical example of this type of Navajo weavings could quite possible never be seen out of this one.
