Vintage Mid-Century Original Oil Painting (three figures) by Aileen Lipkin

A rare early painting by the noted South African artist, Aileen Lipkin (1933 - 1994).

She showed at The Lidchi Art Gallery and Goodman Galleries in South Africa as well as the Grosvenor Gallery, John Whibley Gallery, London and the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon. 

Lipkin was commissioned to create public works and other large-scale installations. Her work is in many private collections and public museums internationally.

Heavy oil paint mixed with sand applied to board with a palette knife lends paintings from her early period a great sense of depth and texture. The original and completely unique hand carved frame was not typical for the time period and complements the work with its delicate colours and textural appearance.

This painting precedes her most famous works titled "Walking Nuns" 1962 which has sold almost 50,000 prints in America and Australia, but one can clearly see she was experimenting with a very similar subject matter in this painting.
