Many old dyes, especially the red dyed wools used to weave Navajo rugs were often not either dyed optimally or not washed thoroughly after the rug was woven.
When a rug with fugitive dyes comes into contact with water at some point the unsafely set red wool starts either immediately or shortly thereafter to release excess dye…. The term for the release of excess or poorly set dye is called a ‘bleed’
Bleeding can be seen most accurately in the white area in a rug that lies adjacent to the red bleeding. When this excess red dyes runs onto the white areas it absorbs some of the dyes and then it developed a pink tinge.
This is extremely unsightly & makes the rug hard to clean.
The excess dye needs to be removed and stabilized before the rug can be professionally and thoroughly washed.
We can remove old set bleeds, stop excess dyes from currently running and wash these beautiful rugs
