Malayer is an ancient city in the central Hamadan district of Iran where Queen Esther in the bible is buried.
It also is a famous rug weaving district with many unique and highly induvial village rugs having been woven there. The older ones such as this one were woven on a wool foundation and I look for these constantly.
The feeling (or as rug collectors say ... the Handle) of the rug is like a pair of old blue jeans, soft and very comforting. The wool has both a soft patina to the touch as well as softly faded and matured colours. The rug has had not been chemically washed or treated at all but does need a good bath in our Rug Spa and Salon.
The navy field, created with extremely saturated natural ingo dyes forms a stark contrast to the geometric shaped Boteh design in a multitude of colours.
A very pleasing and authentic rug that with care will outlast all of us.
