Carved from a single block of wood by members of the Senufo Tribe, N. Ivory Coast/W. Burkina Faso, this stool has what I refer to as a spontaneous and unrehearsed design.
The carver carved following instinct and not a set design and clearly carved without the use of power tools but by hand with a machete, panga or knife.
Objects such as this fascinate me…Normally objects like this were not made for resale but personal use normally in a small village or other rustic place. The artist made the object for his or her own use.
I have seen similar other authentic but unassuming works that were made in remote areas around the world. From remote valleys in Persia, to small villages in the Himalayas or Africa all these objects share one thing besides wonderful aesthetics…The honest intent of their creators.
